http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gaming_with_Blackbars_%28Pillarboxing%29 Thanks for the link, but for ATI it leads to a link to a thread where it leads to the same conflicting information I was talking about (and the thread is pretty much dead, last post was in August). So...

Oh ok, thanks for the link. I never venture out of the general or widscreen solutions forum. Well, this thread may be a little pointless now.. But, a new question for everyone (since we got tons of Nvidia information in the other thread): Has anyone managed to get their ATI card to support pillarbox...

Here's my examples:

1) XFX 7800 GTX
2) 93.71
3) Yes, by using "fixed aspect ratio scaling"

Another example:

1) Sapphire x1900xtx
2) 6.10
3) No

I haven't seen a thread like this, so I'm gonna make one. I wanted to gather some information on pillarboxing (adding black bars on the sides and maintaining aspect ratio). I myself always wondered how many cards support it, and what drivers. I want to know because many times I see conflicting repor...

Well, Nvidia used to support all the options those of us without a scaling monitor need. Unfortantly, from what I've gathered from members on here and other forums the 7900s and the 7600s do not support the options (I believe it gives people an out of sync error on the monitor). Although I can't con...

The ATI drivers are very peculiar. They'll add black bars to a 16:9 resoution, but nothing else. And they don't provide any options like the Nvidia drivers. Sorry to say, but until ATI gets its act together, the answer to both questions (at least as far as I know) is no. I think 16:9 and 16:10 are t...

I'd go for BTMOD (can't go wrong with that) and then get some of the visual upgrades for the textures in the distance (it's been a few months since I've played, so I can't remember the names). I suggest playing the game for a while and then try out OOO on a new character and decide if you like the c...

Thanks for the info Rich (I think!) :D The monitor is the Dell 30" Ultrasharp Flat Panel. If I get the link insert right, you can find it here... http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&sku=222-0863&redirect=1 Unfortunately Dell doesn't give much in the way of sp...

Well you can kind of simulate the FOV change by zooming out to the next view. I know it's not the same, but it'll let you see more.

I can confirm that the ATI drivers will not offer any black bars. So, look for a monitor that has scaling. If you can give me the exact model of the monitor, I might be able to find some information about it (just a google search). Now, older Nvidia cards had scaling built in, but a few on this boar...

Fix works great! Thanks for all the tips. Game is fun, but is it me or is every iteration of NFS getting more and more "shiny". I got everything cranked at max running at 1680 x 1050 and still the in game characters look really bad (specially the first lady, the leader of the 21sts). Otherwise every...

wow, first the spyware and now this?

So.. they have alienated widescreen users along with anyone who doesn't like software watching your internet usage.. EA and DICE are really getting good at this. The only thing they need now is to use starforce and they'll have their bases covered.

The ATI "centered timings" are not the same as Nvidia's... I still haven't figured out what exactly they do, but I believe it's helps a monitor that already scales stuff. Unfortantly for us ATI owners, there is no viable way (yet) to add black bars. The 7900gtx should have the settings under digital...

Thanks for the method, it works great!

Only problem I have is that the stuff isn't saving right (maybe the values keep changing?), so I have to go through the process each time...It's np though, cause I haven't had any crashes, so I don't have to go through the process too often.

It is a common problem this monitor has with 7900 video card (if you have something other than 79xx, then you are fine). If you select anything other than "Monitor Scaling" in the nvidia control panel, the monitor will give an error saying "Out of Range". This mean any 4:3 game can only be played s...

Just out of curiosity. Even though you've instructed the Video Card to display your picture at a 4:3 aspect ratio, technically we're still scaling right? Because we're not running the picture at the monitor's native resolution, even though it is only using the requisite number of pixels to output a...

[quote]anyone know what the going-off-the-screen thing is? seems the FX5500 was a bit of a dud card!?The FX series was in general. FX5200-5700 were horrible cards, the FX5900 was better but still horrible. NVIDIA didn't get back in the lead until the 6x00 series. True enough! I had an FX5500 (it's ...
