For nVidia cards, go to NVIDIA Control Panel, then under Display, choose "Change flat panel scaling" and make sure "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio" is selected. Actually no, which is weird -- and I think you're right, on another forum I was told this was the exact issue! Could it be a problem with nVidia drivers, or does my monitor just not like those resolutions?

Bump: looking at the detailed report here, apparently HL2 can be set to any widescreen resolution, but when I try, the only 16:10 resolutions I can choose are 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 (my monitor's native res), and the only 16:9 resolution available is 1600x900. No sign of 1280x800, 1440x900 etc. Is ...

Make sure there's no resolution already specified in the game's launch options, that might override whatever you choose in the main options.

It may also be a driver problem... which graphics card and driver set are you using?

Just to let you know, guys. I was picking some old games for a notebook, and found my old Half-Life GOTY disc... Works perfectly at widescreen. You just need to make a shortcut and add -w -h in the target line... "...hl.exe -w 1280 -h 800" made it work flawless 1280x800 in my case. So, good luck in...
