I used to play Doom3 V1.0 in widescreen (1280x720) and all worked just great.

I had WinXP Pro SP1 with (am unsure of DirectX version, either 9.0b or 9.0c), a few weeks ago, I had to reformat, and installed XP Pro SP2 this time for better security. Install Doom3 v1.0, and it launches in the usual default mode 640x480.

In the config file do the usual:
seta r_customwidth 1280
seta r_customheight 720
seta r_mode -1
Launch the game... 640x480?
Bring down the console, scroll up to see the initializing log:
-1280x720 is unsupported in 32bit color mode
-redrawing window, 640x480

Huh?
Select new game, in game bring down console and go:
seta r_customwidth 1280
seta r_customheight 720
seta r_mode -1
vid_restart

It attempts 1280x720 but all I get is the gray screen for a few seconds, then it goes back to the 640x480 with the same message ... cannot do 1280x720 in 32bit...

Go back to config file, select windowed mode:
seta r_customwidth 1280
seta r_customheight 720
seta r_mode -1
seta r_fullscreen 0

And it runs just fine in 32bit at 1280x720 in windowed mode!
This makes no sense, I got the very same computer, very same hardware, same D3 version, only difference is SP2 instead of SP1, and latest CATS for my 9800XT, instead of the older CATS that I used.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also cant get it to do widescreen resolutions. I did the changes outlined in the threads here but it doesnt do anything.

Ive got the expansion pack installed though, dont know if this makes any difference. Tried it with the main game and the expansion.

It must be patched as well as when you install Resurrection of evil it has to patch Doom 3.

Got WinXP SP2, Cat 5.3, DX 9.0c

I had the same problem what you gotta do is in the doom3 base folder make a new text file but call it autoexec.cfg then you add the lines...

seta r_customHeight "720"
seta r_customWidth "1280"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectRatio "1"
seta g_fov "95"

For the expansion pack make a clone of the file and stick it in the d3xp folder... this worked for me and it should work for you.

Edit: oh yeah and install latest patch if you havent. with the expansion it updates to 1.2 but 1.3 should be out soon to add EAX support.

What I did is set the doom3config file to read only. I have it at 1280 x 768 16:10 aspect ratio. I changed all my control settings in the game then I exit, then changed the res. in the doom3config file, and right click to read only.

Thats what i tried at first but it still didnt work, and the autoexec.cfg was the only thing which made it work for me.

seta r_customHeight "720"
seta r_customWidth "1280"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectRatio "1"
seta g_fov "95"

You should leave g_fov alone.
Since r_aspectRatio was added with v1.1 patch, there's no need to alter FOV in DOOM3.

Plus, DOOM3 has 90 degrees of FOV at 4:3 aspect ratio by default. So, for 16:9 aspect ratio, 106 degrees would be the correct/proportional value.
