I'll have to check monoprice or something for a cable but I know when I was checking out of dell.com with the 2408WFP they wanted to sell me the DP cable for $99.00 !!!

I hope they are not near that expensive.

ha ! that reminds me of 150€ HDMI cables probably the same "issue"
either way, for normal lenght (<3~5 meter) it's too damn expensive

another question I have is ...

if you buy 2 for the 5870 cards:

can you run ATI Eyefinity using 2 x DVI ports on one card and 1xDVI port on the other one ?

I do not think so, they said eyefinity does not work with crossfire, not sure if they said it doesnt work with multiple cards or not, but I know for sure you would only get to use the power of one card currently.

This is an example of failed information transfer from ati/amd.
If we add a feature, called eyefinity, we inform the public, you and me and the average Joe, you need 2 dvi and one displayport functional screens.

Now, people sitting at home, reading about the new fresh feature you get with the 5800 series, wow, widescreengaming, dang cool I get my old screen, get one more or two more and go on playing, right?

Now, someone at ati didnt do thier job right, as you must explain the conditions of use and also the conditions wehre things dont work, especially if its a totally new feature for most people.
It must also be so clear, that even my sister can understand the differences and she dont even know how to start the computer..almost.

I seen Dave Baumans response here, he failed to even begin to clearly adress this properly.
They need to hire someone who knows to do thier job to the public much better than current mess.

AMD fucked up badly here.
Not a good sign if anyone asks me.
I looked forward eyefinity, however, if I must read every friggin forum, to even get some clue what is required or not required, guess who messed up doing things right?

And I am somewhat informed of the tech involved.

I mean how hard can it be to get it right AMD?

so what you're saying is that the 4 5870 6' cards that were running some game on a 24 screen setup on linux were just there for the outputs and that 1 GPU was doing all the work ?

I see two cases here:
1 - there is a miscommunication between engineers & marketing/communication
2 - AMD wanted to launch the feature now for the "wow" effect (not the game :p) but didn't expect/anticipate the existing community (or minimized its importance) and they did not want to communicate too much on the subject due to its current limitations...

Actually, they just need to design technology that doesn't have such obscure issues that it needs explanation. Clearly what we want is technically possible (a 3x DVI video card) and any monkey at ATI could have figured that out so they went out of their way to *not* give the consumer what we want *and* make us spend even more money for no good reason. Thats not how you run a business.

[quote]This is pretty serious if all this speculation is true...

completely agree ... if it is true ... then ... FARK !

I already sold my TH2GO and have 3 x DVI LCDs sitting here ... I also ordered a basic DP->DVI adapter thinking it will do the job ... I honestly dont see why this would not work ...

is this really a speculation ?

is there anyone here with a 5870 card that has 3 x LCDs with DVI ports that can confirm if it works or not ? gosh ...

crazy !!!!!

EDIT: it says here on this site :

http://www.ramelectronics.net/computer-parts/computer-cables/monitor-cables/displayport-cables/displayport-to-dvi-adapter-dportm2fdvi/prodPTC00004.html

that they are ACTIVE ... would that not do the job ?????!!!

Because that site doesn't know what it's talking about. They're selling a passive adapter there and passing it off as an active transcoder converting adapter.

As far as I can tell I can only find the Apple mini-dp to dual-DVI active adapters for sale for $99. Reading online about them does exactly impress me though. Apparently Mac users have had headaches with them, never mind adding a dp to mini-dp adapter also into the mix to make them work with the current 5870. Anyone have any links to any non-Apple version of a displayport to dual-dvi active adapter? I can only find an aftermarket one that does the exact opposite (dvi to mini-dp).

ATM, I fear someone is going to have to be the test subject soon on buying the Apple "mini-dp to dual-dvi" adapter and also a "dp to mini-dp" adapter and seeing in that combo works.

Yes actually :D

If you read the source I did they explained it was a special flight sim program on linux and that it was not just one instance of the game but multiples of them and they were on a time demo and broken into sections to make it look like one instance.

To further that point watch the video of it and see when the aircraft crashes and they respawn the aircraft. There is some serious input lag when they reset the demo between the 4 instances. You'll see the 4 different grid of 6 displays out of sync for a second or 2 while it resets.

I am beginning to feel like I'm at a circus and we went to the freakshow tent and just now figured out how it was done with smoke and mirrors.

The 24-screeen sim isn't 24 screens in a DirectX game in Windows.

And now we find that every solution requires either an active adapter or a newly purchased display with DP built in.

Has anybody tried this one? Or know where to buy it from?

http://www.bizlinktech.com/future_displayport.html

Scroll Down to: DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Link Adapter Cable

I can't find it for sale online though anywhere.
