is this just a glitch I shouldn't worry about or a sign of something more serious ?

Most likely the problem will persist, but it wont worsen. It may change with drivers but wont be that bad.

is it driver related?

It is a known issue, if you do a search of this forum alone you will see a hoard of threads with people detailing issues they experienced.

The cause can be a number of things, from power, to firmware to drivers.

The general tips are to try and use a certified adaptor, ensure it is provided with enough power if it draws its power from USB, and to use the latest drivers.

Things have improved vastly since last year now that more certified adaptors have been released so just keep an eye on it.
The bizlink adaptor I have used to have problems, and would only work stable with driver 10.4, any others and it was flaky, I moved up to 11.4 not so long ago and its been perfect again, so thankfully the issue has cleared for that adaptor.

Just a little update, the same thing happens with a linux live cd using standard vesa drivers so it looks like a hardware issue
