In the last two days new information has been released indicating that, as of CCC 11.10, Bezel Compensation is no longer restricted to identical screens. This note was posted at Rage3D's FAQ regarding Eyefinity:

AMD Product Manager for Eyefinity and Stereo3D, Shane Parfitt, spoke with Rage3D.com briefly ... about some of the new enhancements contained in AMD Catalyst 11.10 for Eyefinity, which we will share with you below:

Three major enhancments were added to the official Catalyst releases as of the 11.10 release, which went live on 10/31. Some of the enhancements were previously seen in preview driver sets.

Eyefinity configurations of 5x1 displays are now supported, in both Portrait or Landscape rotation. For AMD Radeon HD 5000 series cards, you are still limited to a maximum resolution on any axis of 8000 pixels, however for the Radeon HD 6000 series, support for DX11's new maximum resolution of 16K x 16K was added when the display engines were tweaked over the previous Evergreen generation design.

Notably this means that 5x1 Eyefinity configurations with a canvas size exceeding 8K on an axis will only be supported under DirectX 11 - and this includes the Aero desktop, which is DX9-based and must be disabled if you want the extra size on the desktop.

Additionally, the 3% tolerance restriction for enabling Bezel Compensation (BC) has been removed. Bezel Compensation uses the EDID reported attributes of the display to determine the pixel density, and thus configure the display to 'hide' behind the bezels in the viewed image. AMD discovered that with the same model monitor but from different years, or even across different inputs (DVI vs. DP, for example) on the same monitor, different enough pixel densities could offerred which would stop BC from being enabled, for no good reason.

Removing this limitation, users can now enable Bezel Compensation on dissimilar monitors, although it may not work very well - and users are advised of this when running the BC wizard from the Vision Engine Control Center.

AMD are expanding the test cases used for Eyefinity Quality Assurance testing, and Shane emphasized how committed to Eyefinity improvements AMD is, indicating we should see more updates 'soon'. In the meantime, progress on supporting mixed-mode Landscape and Portrait display configurations is continuing, but nothing to report as yet; similarly with Crossfire and Eyefinity stability issues and Stereo3D + Eyefinity + Crossfire.
