The resolution can go over the 4096 limit because softth has it output through more than one output, the dual-link x1 max doesn't apply like on the th2g

My question is not "how did you get that resolution?" My question is "Do you need DX10 (and Vista) to get that resolution, or do you only need an 8800 GPU?"

Your question is intending to ask about the two tall side screens, right? :?:

I will try to be more clear. My question is this: Do you need DX10/Vista to use a resolution (any resolution) that spans more than 4096 pixels? It is simply a question of hardware versus software. It has nothing to do with this specific resolution, or the fact that this particular configuration uses screens in portrait orientation.

In the other topic we were talking about similar things you had an answering post:

On the WSGF boards, by reading this site carefully. For example, if you click here you will see GTR2, a DX9 game, running at 4960x1600 using SoftTH. The center screen is at 2560x1600, while the side screens are 1200x1600 in portrait orientation. 4960>4096 by quite a bit.

So I do not know what you were asking for.

As far as I know here from any post here with SoftTH you can exceed the 4096 f. g. by using one card dual 1600x1200 and the other card single 1600x1200.

You only need a DX10 GPU to use resolutions over 4096.

You mean the resolution at one dvi interface?
Did you test it?
If yes how?

What do you mean? There are no single displays that have that high resolution. I meant a SoftTH setup with a combined resolution of over 4096.
That's what the OP has done.
If you meant using that resolution in Windows (not in a game) I don't know what the limitations are then, but that 4096 is a limitation of DirectX up to 9, 10 upped the limit to 8192 and it is a hardware limitation too because GPU have the hardware limitations the same as the software limitations are.

Thanks, geeman. That confirms what I thought.

The limit we have with DX7 (2048 pixels) is different than the DX8/9 limit of 4096, though. With the DX7 limit, any DX7 game cannot be run at any resolution the exceeds 2048 pixels regardless of the hardware driving the graphics. With DX8/9 we thought we had a 4096-pixel limit, but apparently it was only the hardware. Take a GPU that supports larger resolutions, such as an nVidia 8800 series GPU, and suddenly it's possible to run DX9 games (such as GTR2) at resolutions greater than 4096.

Hey SpeedyVV,

You should check out this post, showing triplehead GTR2 at 5040x1050. There's a Youtube video linked there, and it shows GTR2 running in this resolution with a very smooth framerate. Of course there's no way to actually tell, but it looks significantly higher than 25. You might want to explore hardware and config differences between your setup and the 5040x1050.

Thx to both of you for this statement.

so dx10 cards can output 3d accelerated more than 4094x ... but there is no display for it and Th2Go does not support it now.
