Greetings, fellow humans. My first post here.

So, how about it? Matrox has stated that customising the TH2G's EDID might be possible in the future. Why in the future? Why not right now? How much of a "not likely in our lifetime" -kind of hack would this be? I haven't actually bought a TH2G just yet, but what I'm thinking of here is setting the refresh rate to 70 Hz for 3840x1024. My cheap-as-dirt BenQ display (FP93G, the kind of which I'm getting two more soon) flickers a bit at 60 Hz. Not that eye scorching crt flicker, but still a bit annoying on desktop use. I suppose the displays wouldn't mind the higher refresh rate as they support it anyway, but would it do damage to TH2G? Ok, enough with the babble already. Just couldn't find any discussion on the subject so any info and opinions would be appreciated.

The EDID can be edited by Matrox, so there's no reason to think it can't be changed. Whether or not we will ever get the tools to do it on our own is anyone's guess.

3840x1024 @ 70 Hz shouldn't be possible, as Matrox has said that 3840x1024 @ 60 Hz is the bandwidth limit of the TripleHead2Go.

Hey JKeefe ...
I'm not so up on the understanding of these things ... could you help me out a little ?
When you say ...

3840x1024 @ 70 Hz shouldn't be possible, as Matrox has said that 3840x1024 @ 60 Hz is the bandwidth limit of the TripleHead2Go.

I don't know what "bandwidth" means in this respect.
Does that mean the total pixels created by 3840x1024 or that is the res limit ?
And ... I wouldn't have a clue where the 60 Hz comes in to it ... :?

Could 3 x 1440x900 @ 60 Hz be possible for three widescreens ? ... it is less pixels than 3840x1024.

Thanks ... I really do struggle with these things ...

Bandwidth means pixels per second. At 3840x1024 we have 3,932,160 pixels. At a refresh of 60 Hz (60 times per second), we have 235,929,600 pixels per second. According to what Matrox told me, that is the bandwidth limit of the TripleHead2Go, i.e. it cannot handle more than 235,929,600 pixels per second.

Triple 1440x900 is 3,888,000 pixels and at 60 Hz requires a bandwidth of 233,280,000 pixels per second. This is below the bandwidth limit and so is possible from the simple math perspective.

Thanks for that ... I begin to understand ... 8)

Two resolutions I would like to see would be 3 x 1440x900 and 3 x 1280x800 ... now there is hope ... :D

Maybe I'm getting desperate here but... 70 Hz is "only" 17 % more than 60Hz so if by any chance Matrox ever releases the tools, one could try it anyway at the risk of frying his (my) TH2G, right? Maybe Matrox limited it to 60 Hz just to be on the safe side. Yeah, desperate... Other than that my options would narrow down to:

1. Forget about it. Stay in the cramped world of 19" or get a 20+" ws display. Quite conservative to my tastes.

2. Invest in it. Get better displays possibly without DVI or with a higher price tag and definitely with a thicker bezel.

3. Deal with it. And hope for a DVI version (and that it would make any difference).

Sorry, I should start writing a diary instead of flooding it all here...

I'm not sure if I'd put 17% in the "only" category, but I understand what you're saying: maybe there's some room left.

Cramped world of 19"? You think three 19" monitors are cramped? I can't find enough stuff to fill that space. :) Besides, they are a good match for the TripleHead2Go because 1600x1200 monitors can't be used in the native resolution.

A DVI version should increase the maximum bandwidth of the TripleHead2Go because dual-link DVI supports higher resolutions.

Too much of widescreengamingforum is when you are chatting live on it. :D By 19" I mean just one of them like any reasonable person would have. You now the kind of people that would consider next month's rent more important than striving for the ultimate gaming experience.
