Post subject:  Finding a new term for multiple FOVs

Hi everyone,

I am a long time lurker. I have three U2415M monitors and a crossfire rig and have been playing most games in eyefinity. I admit that I am tiny bit disappointed.

Despite most common issues (FOV, centred menus, etc...) being roughly resolved, at least in the AAA titles, there is one thing that is still missing and don't know how to explain it easily.

All we have is a glorified big desktop over three screens. What we need is the ability to render graphics on three separate planes, one for each screen. Like if we had three separate cameras. We would have to input the angle of position of the screens, but on the upside, the screens would not need to be the same size, or even next to each other.

If this is not clear, this the best explanation of it I found on the web:

I know this is supported in some driving sim games, however I couldn't find a "term" to refer to it. As you see, I need to explain it in a paragraph. If we had a term it would be much easier to refer to, search for, review, and market. This could, one hopes, lead to more support all around. I propose calling it "multiple FOV support", but maybe you guys can come up with something better.

Hopefully, we can make some headway on this. What do you all think?

The article is totally right, but hey, I'm already happy when a game support an FOV larger than 90 with a hack or something in order to play the damn game on multi monitors. Incredibly happy if it's fully supported by having the HUD still centered. That is so rare already nowadays, that I could barely ask for more.

If developers acknowledges people have multiple monitors, we could have much nicer implementations like in Supreme Commander, where you can have your map on your secondary monitor.

I think multimonitor is continuing to gain traction, judging from Steam hardware surveys, but we're still pretty niche. Racer_S has demonstrated that multiple camera fov support can be added to games that don't natively support it, such as Skyrim. But, I don't think he's gotten past proof of concept.

Honestly, I'll take what I can get most of the time and I don't expect huge strides to be made in that regard until we get more developers to support single camera mutlimonitor fovs properly in their titles. I'm still picking my battles for multimonitor support.

I hear you guys. It does seem like learning to run before learning walk. We are still far from universally supporting multiple monitors with a single FOV, let alone many.

However, my point is that we can make it much easier if we could at least agree to a terminology. As of today just googling it is a mission, and explaining it takes a paragraph. If we can at least a common term I think it will make much easier to ask for it, and refer to it.

Having 3 screens is niche, but having 2, with different sizes is pretty common. This feature would make use of the second screen.

And I don't think it is that hard to implement from a technical point of view. You would just need an extension from the graphical engines, and perhaps some explicit driver support.

If it's just a term you're after for this phenomenon: Multi-Angle support, or MAsupport for short.
