I am an nVidia fanboy usually but now i am builidng a new mid spec build i think i will go for the 4870 on a price/performance reason. I will also wait a few weeks though and see what the war does to cost. Can't see ATI cutting alot, but nVidia may well have to.
What are the Ati drivers like for custom resolutions etc these days?

Someone just found the GTX 260 FTW for $299AR. That would give you about the same performance of a 4870.

Buy.com also have the PNY GTX-280 for $389AR. That's a pretty good deal.

that is a good price, unfortunately in Australia it is not so good. I think the cheapest ATI 4870 is about 325 Aus and the nVidia 280 600 Aus. Too big a gap. Do buyit offer international shipping?
