These are two unrelated products and neither is an OLED.

Consumer level OLED displays above 11" are still unfortunately several years off. There are too many difficulties manufacturing them.

The LED backlit TVs are nice, but currently have much too high a price premium over comparably high end CCFL backlit sets.

If I could hang three of these on one large wall, I think I might give up the 5040x1050 res.

OLED has a serious problem other than price and manufacturing, the latter of which ironically is claimed to be a more affordable than LCD, a mere ink jetting process. The grid of material forming the diodes within the film has to be precisely calculated though.

The blue part of the color spectrum in OLED tech is very vulnerable to moisture contamination, even from slight humidity levels in the air. Thus the projected lifespan of OLED sets is only about 30,000 hrs best case scenario, half that of LCD.

That's IF you believe Sony's very questionable claim, which some manufacturers such as Sharp have refuted based on contrasting lab results showing more like 10-15,000 hrs at best for OLED lifespan.

The technology I'd rather see manufacturers pursue is PLED. It's basically the same concept only with a polymer based substance on the screen vs organic. The polymer helps resist moisture contamination. Even the very first PLEDs tested in a lab lasted 198,000 hrs.

There are other key differences that could affect price. PLED was discovered at Cambridge University in the UK, whereas OLED was invented by Kodak. PLED definitely has more humble beginnings and is potentially superior technology.

OLED technology is licensed by Kodak, so Sony pays them royalties. Cavendish Labs in the UK was formed by those whom discovered PLED tech. So far the only major manufacturer I've seen backing PLED is Philips, though it's been a while since I checked on PLED's progress.

Speaking of hanging on a wall, that is one of the key advantages of this technology. The substrate the film is sprayed on can be super thin, even curved. It's possible to make very low profile TVs that literally hang like paintings on the wall, not to mention with no back lighting needed or viewing angle problems and superior contrast and color.

I'm less inclined to think SED/FED is going to be the next viable TV tech, simple because it's been on paper since the 80s and still no one has come out with a production model or even prototype as far as I know.

There have been working models of SED shown to the public.
