Hi all...broke down and bought the dell 2405 fpw 24". A beautiful display imho. However the games I play (nascar 2003, some combat flight sims, etc). Struggle a wee bit on this monitor. Meaning they look gorgeous but they are not nearly as smooth as on my viewsonic 21 " crt. I am ready to return the dell since my favorite games aren't just right on this display. I notice the irregularities while playing. It is distracting. I know all you guys are using lcd's...any advice or suggestions for getting games to play as smooth as possible?

Specs below...

DFI LP UT nF4 SLI-D (623 bios)
AMD 4000+ San Deigo
Antec neo 550w psu
XFX 7800GTX 81.98 drivers
Crucial Ballistix 4 x 512 2-3-2-8
2 120gb Maxtor Raid 0
Plextor CD-RW
Plextor DVD-RW
Audigy 2
Klipsch 4.1 Speakers

I wouldn;t be so quick to dismiss the monitor. But you have to realise you are adding loads more realestate to power. Wait for one of the lads to give you the full technical run down first...

Yes..no doubt more real estate. I did upgrade to an 7800 gtx. Thought that would do the trick. CPU could be a bit mroe but I think it is just the fast motion and all that is going on. Let's say a race..42 cars, full detail, etc. there is a lot taking place.

thx..

I would try running your high-end games at lower resolutions than the default 1920x1200. If the desired resolution is not immediately available to you, you can easily add custom resolutions to nVidia cards. Just right click the desktop, NVIDIA Display, select your monitor, select "Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates," click Add, and enter in a custom resolution. Did games run smoothly on the 21" monitor at 1600x1200? If so, try 1600x1000. The 2405FPW should scale pretty well.

CPU could be a bit more

I don't think that is the problem, the newest games don't often need a mother cpu. They run mostly on the gpu. If it was due to the cpu it should also run less good on the smaller monitor.

Hi all...broke down and bought the dell 2405 fpw 24". A beautiful display imho. However the games I play (nascar 2003, some combat flight sims, etc). Struggle a wee bit on this monitor. Meaning they look gorgeous but they are not nearly as smooth as on my viewsonic 21 " crt. I am ready to return the dell since my favorite games aren't just right on this display. I notice the irregularities while playing. It is distracting. I know all you guys are using lcd's...any advice or suggestions for getting games to play as smooth as possible?

Specs below...

DFI LP UT nF4 SLI-D (623 bios)
AMD 4000+ San Deigo
Antec neo 550w psu
XFX 7800GTX 81.98 drivers
Crucial Ballistix 4 x 512 2-3-2-8
2 120gb Maxtor Raid 0
Plextor CD-RW
Plextor DVD-RW
Audigy 2
Klipsch 4.1 Speakers

Sweet machine you have! :D
Try running the 2405 with a dual link dvi cable instead. It has worked miracles for some of our users if you look in the tech support section. :D

It just seems a bit choppy to me. Can't really describe it properly. Does run better in d3d (on the dell) than opengl although with a nvidia card I prefer open gl. Much prettier.

It is :) Do you use dual or single link DVI? (the dell comes with a single link, but the dual link has higher bandwidth and people report great improvments on the 2405fpw with it!:)
