Hi there, first time poster. hard reader. great forum.

this is my first eyefinity setup and first time ati user. always preferred nvidia. but after a lot of research ppl seemed to prefer eyefinity over surround.. running 3x hp zr24w, ati 6970 CF.

got the eyefinity to work, presets are annoying since the y never group right in extended desktop, but something i`ll have to live with for now i guess..

but what really annoys me, is that my desktop background is not in order with extended desktop. no matter how i arrange my screens with CCC it displays the desktop background wrong.

now they are 2 - 1 - 3 . middle is primary of course. all works fine, screens are properly set up etc.
but it corrects itself if i put my primary screen on the left screen. like 1 - 2 - 3

this is what it looks like when i have primary screen in middle:

is there anyway to fix this?

Well you can fix it using Ultramon or similar program.

could you not swap the connections on the gfx card
or (and this solution takes a bit of messing around)
in ccc disable the group
uninstall ati drivers, switch off the pc, unplug all the monitors except the one you want to be display 1.
restart the pc when it tries to find ati drivers press cancel
turn off the pc, plug in the monitor you want to be display 2, reboot again cancel any new hardware found.
in windows properties your lcd's should be correctly listed as display 1 and 2
switch off the pc, attach monitor you want to be 3, switch on the pc again cancel any new hardware found.
make sure displays are correctly listed in windows as displays 1,2 and 3.
reboot and then this time install the ati drivers.

ps: ive not tried this so I cant guarantee it will work

is this a common problem?

It is.

The reason, in a 2-1-3 monitor config, and monitor 1 as the primary windows will set the desktop to start form 0:0 on the XY axis of the primary monitor.
As such the position of monitor 2 is equal to (if all monitors are, lets say1920x1080) -1920:0 with monitor 1 starting at 0:0 and monitor 3 starting at 1920:0.

+-------------+ +-------------+ +-------------+
| Mon2 | | Mon1 | | Mon3 |
| -1920:0 | | 0:0 | | 1920:0 |
+-------------+ +-------------+ +-------------+

So as you switch between eyefinity and extended modes the desktop needs to be adjusted... for the background there is a few tools like ultramon and some batch files that tie into the ati profile, you could also then use stardock fences to keep your desktop contents tidy with the ability to have a different layout per resolution/configuration. Great for keeping all my icons in exactly the same location when i switch between modes.

Sadly I dont know why Windows does display like that when in eyefinity mode, as it is displayed like that when you wish to clone the same display on 2 screens.

It may be something to do with the way the ATI drivers operate, but I am just speculating.

When you make the display group, the first thing it asks you afterward is "is the display order correct?", and gives a yes or no answer. if you click no, it lets you specify which monitor goes where. Simply disable the group, and recreate the display group. after you do, it should show up above the picture if you want to rearrange them.

As to why Windows displays it like that, its the only way it knows how to, it doesn't know how to show 3 grouped monitors, so it just shows 1 and 2 with one of them "extended". no worries.
