I bought a Gainward 8800GTS 640MB a few days ago and it's FAST. I run Stalker at maximum @ 1680x1050 and 16AF and 8AAQ.

Nothing wrong with the current cards besides a few drivers need to be cleaned up, but if you dont need it. Waiting will probably benifit you with a better card and better drivers.

If not then atleast you know you can get a better price!

The drivers are fine, stop living in the past. You can have SLi even in Vista with great performance.

I would personally go with Ati HD2900xt, because Crysis is said to take full advantage of what it has to offer.

Are u saying that Crysis wont "take full advantage" of the 8800s?

there is no option for not jumping headlong into DX10 ...

need to add a poll option for "DX10 sounds nice, but i have to pay rent / feed baby / etc ..."

Yeah...

I wonder why all real-time demos of Crysis have been run on 8800GTX's.

Besides, DX10 is very specific on what features that the hardware support so both cards should do pretty much the same functions. Unlike DX9 where they left implementation up to the card makers.

If you are upgrading now, there is no reason not to get a DX10 card. Don't forget that they also happen to be the fastest DX9 cards as well. So even if you can't upgrade to Vista right away, you will still reap the benefits of the faster hardware.

Dang.

With the price drops of the 8800's, I'm really torn between a £322 GTX, and an XFX overclocked Ultra for £450. I've heard the cooler on the Ultra is far better than the 'standard' GTX, that's the only reason I'm entertaining that one. ;)

SLI is a waste of money to me right now, i'm waiting for Dual GPU cards, and intel's .45nm Procs that will also be x64 compatible. I've heard speculations that the 8800 is basically a dual gpu card and nvidia won't tell anyone that it's how it achieves it's performance b/c when they see that you can get 1 card with the same power as 2 sli cards people will convert. also I know PCI-E 2.0 is close to being finished, so I think the bus is supposed to be x32.. but even when it does come out no card will use it's potential.

which brings me to this thread.. when a G9 card comes out the 8800's will probably drop by 50% price wise... We're still in the middle of standard changes.. so I'm waiting patiently with my maxed out old gen hardware.

Although I haven't been paying attention to ATI the past year b/c I know they're working on that worthless Hybrid mobo since Amd bought them.

Hmm Nvidia has announced big price cuts on the way to compete with ATI. When those go thru it may not be a bad idea to get a new card if your at anything less than a 7800GTX. If you have a 7800 or higher tho I think waiting it out may benifit you more because I have a feeling the next wave of major cards will be a big leap in performance and compatablity.

What is this x64 compatible you speak of btw?? meaning it runs faster in a x64 OS?? thats happy news to me since I recently converted to Vista x64 and would be a good payoff.

A x64 proc means it is a 64bit proc, which is meant for 64bit Operating Systems.*they were created ideally for server usage b/c they would run faster, but most hardware was plagued by a lack of x64 driver support, that isn't the case anymore... but now there is Vista x64 and I have yet to see anything geared towards x64 Vista* I have personally tried XP Pro x64 and Vista x64 but there's a huge lack of support.. and it's not hardware related anymore.. it's that developers simply don't care about XP Pro x64 or Vista x64 at this moment* Xp Pro x64 is basically worthless b/c of Vista x64.

You can't use a x64 OS without a x64 Proc and x64 drivers for all hardware.

Intel has yet to make a x64 proc, but the .45nm ones will be x64.
AMD has had them out for a very very long time.
