Thanks everyone for responding!

My PC is up to snuff - I play pretty much everything maxed out at 1920x1200 ...

Modded 360s can play "back ups" of xbox games, which is the only reason I would want a modded one.

My main use would be for two player split-screen when a friend comes over--coop fps and fighting games, mostly. I don't really care about Live as I have a pretty poor internet connection and won't be paying for any Live subscriptions. I did originally want to get a 360 because I felt I was missing out with Gears of War, but now that is coming to the PC ... Still there are some exclusives like Dead Rising or whatever that zombie game was called that I'd like to play, and I'm sure there will be more down the line ...
Yeah, it's called Dead Rising (and it's awesome)

Although, I discourage going for a 360 if you're not going to use Live. Why? Because half of the 360 is Live. And once you have it, you don't want to go back.

Just for reference, no one refers to them as "Modded" 360's, but rather "Flashed" ones.

As far as I know Dead Rising is not the only exclusive. For example the game Mass Effect is going to be an exclusive too.

I find it interesting that over the last year or so more multiplatform games come out for the PC too. People kept complaining about hardware requirements and piracy etc, but they still sell them for the PC as well. Not that the PC has the best version most of the time, but still.

If you want to play games and you don't mind about the extra cost of games for the consoles, then in my opinion the Xbox 360 is indeed the best choice right now. I don't know about 5 years for now and I don't care tbh.

Oh of course not.

I think there was a little one back called 'Halo' or something.

If you develop a game primarily for consoles, a PC port doesn't have to cost a great deal of money. As long as the game was a success on consoles in the first place, a bare-bones PC port is a very low risk investment. It's sort of like buying a scratch ticket where there's almost a 50% chance you'll get your dollar back, and the chance of making much more than that exists.

I'm not going to try to brag, but I'm pretty confident I know the most about Xbox's than anyone on the forum (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

1.) Xbox 360's cannot be modded in the various ways that the original could. There is currently no exploit that allows you to do this.

2.) The only "mod" for the 360 is to flash the DVD drive. This voids the warranty, but however recent ones cannot be detected on Xbox Live.

3.) The bi-annual updates by Microsoft to the 360's firmware have stopped these flashes from being undetectable. So if you get a flashed 360, get word from some of your friends with flashed 360's before you go onto Xbox Live to get the most recent update.

4.) Even with a "modded" Xbox 360 or a transfer kit such as XSATA, there is still no way to put movies or pictures onto your 360's hard drive without downloading them from Microsoft. Music can only be put on by ripping.

Just a few things to note.
If i remember correctly you defended the rlod as the consumers fault for misshandling the equipment, so much for knowing the most about xbox's

Because most of the time it is the consumer's fault, as if the temperature of the room had been lower and/or the Xbox not in a space where it wouldn't get enough airflow, the solder would overheat and melt causing the heatsink to be loose, therefore causing the processor to overheat and the RROD.

Trust me, I know what i'm talking about.

Keep in mind that if you live in a country that is not fully supported/officaly by xbox live, you will have problem downloading certain demos and videos and even updates through xbox live.
I don' t know if these restrictions apply to the PS3 or Nintendo Wii consoles.
