I'll sort out my act and test out Vista to NAS speeds (and NAS to Vista speeds) ASAP. Will be interested to see if it's different to XP/NAS speeds...

My results for any combination where one side was xp or linux(nas) were the same, even if the other was vista. Only vista to vista functionned properly. Overall I get 10mbytes/s one way and 20mbytes/s the other way, give or take a few megs.

As for sata speeds, theoretically the interfaces are 1.5gbits/s and 3gbits/s for sata v1 or v2. Unfortunately the source platters rarely feed them with more then about 450-480mbits/s, hence the typical 50-60mbytes/s performance from a single drive.

In theory if you had 2-3 drives in raid 0, you should be able to saturate the gigabit interface with more then it can pass.

I've unchecked use of ipv6 from the first install day, doesn't that prevent it interfering?

I'll give it a shot.

I forgot about this due to work being... well, shit.

Vista is no faster to/from the NAS than XP.

I've found that all combos of OSs have problems except vista2vista.

examples:
vista pc to/from nas/linux
xp pc to/from nas/linux
vista pc to/from xp pc

all these share low performance

vista pc to/from vista laptop
this one is the only working full speed (55-65mbytes/s both ways)

my only guess is the changed/reworked networking engine that only works properly if it doesn't have to deal with an old version in xp/linux.

Although I haven't tried it yet, synology support has told me about http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/#download so I could test my nas without the hdd as a variable. I'm gonna see later if that has a different result.
