I've just stumbled across a copy of Resident Evil 1 for the PC

classic game in my opinion and I'd love to see how it fares on a widescreen monitor. Would also like to complete it for the umpteenth time!

But...

When the autoplay runs, or I try to install, I get this error:

"This game would be able to run only when Windows95"

Does anyone know a way around this in xp pro?

I really can't be arsed to install 95 on another partition just to play this game!

It's probaly not a good idea to post links to illegal torrents.

 :(

Hepharade has some type of solution here then (but can't really understand it because I've never tried to play resident evil 1 on xp):

I used to own that game years ago (ive got the Gamecube remake these days :)).

It only supported 3D cards to run the game. I beleive they were Voodoo 1, Rendition Verte (cant remember how its spelt..) and possible the Matrox Mystique.

You may be able to get the game to run via glidos, or a glide wrapper, but as all the backgrounds were 320x240, and the only game res was 640x480, i very much doubt youll be able to get ti to run in widescreen.

To play old games i put together a PC specifically for win 98 and 95 games. If you really want to play a lot of old games, you could probably put together a whole system for about £30 (maybe less! prociding you already have a case spair).

Does XP's "run in compatibility mode" not work? I've installed a utility or two that required a certain OS. Just right-click on the setup.exe file --> Properties --> Compatibility, and the rest should be straight forward. You might have to do the same to the game's .exe file too.

It doesent use Direct 3D or Open GL to do the rendeing, it uses Glide and whatever the api for the matrox and renditions was. I cant see how it would work on any modern graphics card without a wrapper. If that can be solved then it could possibly work with compatibility mode turned on.

Think i'll give it a miss then.

Sounds like a lot of effort to play an old game.

Can't believe its that old though!

Feels like a few years ago when it first came out on the PS1

Final Fantasy VII has the same problem - it'll install in 'compatability mode' but even with 'compatability mode' it falls over and dies regularly on XP or 2000. It's a known bug - they did release a 'patch', but that causes other issues as well. *sigh*
