Perhaps I should do one about TF2? Although it'll be pretty boring... spawned, ran, got snipered by eZ`. Rinse and repeat.

I thought about Team Fortress 2 being my second article if I do another one but the team aspects of that game make me worry how well I can pull it off. Perhaps it would be better to save that one for later when I know more about working the system.

Yes, getting used to server browsers does mean you gotta learn it. But I do find that it becomes natural after 3-5 rounds of trying to figure out what information I can gather from what's displayed.

Part of the fun of this for me is learning these things in a public way, so I assume I will get to know more about server browsing as I try more games and perhaps play a little more UT.

That's all i've done since like 2002/3
The odd SP campaign occasionally ofc. It took me a full year to finish cod4 on SP.

SV and I are fairly similar with respect to online gaming. My only experiences of it was about three days of Quake 2 and Jedi Knight 1 multiplayer when I first got a 56k modem, and about an hour of Team Fortress 2 against eZ`... who hammered me.

Yeah, another factor is that for many online gamers its about the community. So you pick basically one server, get to know the guys there crack a beer and have fun with them. And the game is the same every time that you play it etc.

If it were not for the community that I found on TF2 I wouldn't have put half the hours into it that I did.

The server browser really just disappears after that, I haven't used it in TF2 in years. I have my one server on my favorites and then I can join via my steam friends list aswell

Great article, SV. I think you certainly achieved your stated goals.

As an introduction to MP gaming I, too, feel you got a raw first experience. Custom servers, experienced players, and the fact that UT in general is unforgiving on newcomers. Also, the teleporting could be lag or the translocator, which is an actual in-game teleportation device that is crazy useful in the hands of an experienced player.

There is sooo much awesomeness to be had in UT that I hope this doesn't put you off the game. I'd be happy to have you join in my server sometime (stock maps/content) for some co-op against an all AI team. In general that would be a good way to wet your feet in MP gaming, try AI first then jump into all-human games later.

What a good write up. entertaining and I can see this happening to any new MP entrant.

UT was my first ever serious long term game, and my first real MP experience. I played it to death single player before I got bored and wanted more started fiddling with the multiplayer. It was my first ever multiplayer game, over telephone line dialup I must say. I think I played UT series MP for at least 5 years NON STOP MP, all the way until UT3 whose MP was dissappointing. That aside, I know exactly what you would have experienced jumping onto a server full of oldschool UT fans.

Now the funny thing is I can't go back to single player games, I don't have the concentration span. I think the thrill of multiplayer is much more appealing to me now. The thrill of out smarting, outskilling, outgunning someone else one-on-one is simply addictive. Going for the EPIC Pwnage move and pulling it off, then pausing to type some sort of taunt to your opponent is the thing i love most. One of the things I loved about UT series, they have taunts. Things like "You play like a girl" voice played when you pressed an F5 key or something. Love it.

Of course I only play FPS. BF2 at the moment.

MP, is my favourite passtime.

Son of a... haha. Is that what that thing on my arm was? I kept shooting that and shooting it and could not tell what was happening.

Go play TF2 Jump! Jump! map servers. They're wicked. Puzzle solving jumping ftw.

I love the UT series, but I must say I have the same experience when playing online. I keep to bots and LAN Parties.
