Hello everyone :)

Recently took the plunge into Eyefinity (5970) with 3 x 30" monitors (each at 2560 x 1600). Some quirkiness with the setup but Windows 7 seems to be running ok now at a large desktop (would prefer to use profiles to swap back to normal extended desktop when not gaming, but the profile switch seems to be a little ropey).

On the good;

WS gaming is great :) L4D2 runs brilliantly at 7680 x 1600.

I've not really got stuck into hacking some of the games to work yet because of a couple of issues. The main one is World of Warcraft occasionally bombs out with a 'not enough storage to process that command' error. According to the forums that's normally down to an error with mods, but even without it occurs occasionally.

I reduced the occurence a lot by reducing the graphic detail a little (mainly the ground clutter and grass settings. I found another post saying that this could cause the errors at high resolutions). It does bomb out occasionally now, normally during transitions (occasionally) or when I do a screenshot (more often). I also saw that for the 5970 the video memory is a limitation for super-high reses.

GRID as well was like a slide-show when I started it. If I reduce the res down to a 3600 x 1024 it runs ok but looks poor :). Demigod and DoW 2 were also slide-show speed.

I only have the options for 2400 x 600, 3600 x 1024 or native. I saw that you can change the resolutions presented to the OS by a monitor, but it looks a bit fiddly and I wanted some confirmation before proceeding.

The question I have is (thanks to all those who've made it this far :D);

Am I being too optimistic with my res for most games? Should I downgrade (using the forum post to force a different middle res) to 5760 x 1200 (for example) before I get into using it in a big way? Like I said L4D2 runs ok (and WoW as well, mostly) but I know both those engines are quite old.

Hi there and welcome aboard :)

So you are using one single 5970 für your Triplehead? Might be that it hasn't the power to pull this resolution, but I doubt it. I can run 4960x1600 in GRID with a single GTX 260 smoothly. But comparing to my former Setup 5120x1200 (20"/24"/20") the performance dropped significantly with adding the 30", especially in demanding 3D-action/roleplaying games. Your resolution cries VRam and 1 GB on the ATI 5XXX-Series might be just to little.

Maybe it has something to do with you DVI-Link. 30"s need Duallink-DVI and it may be possible that your 5970 is simply not able to cope with 3x30 over DVI. Or is it Displayport you have? (Dell 3008WFP)

OK its all guesswork. Nevertheless I would recommend selling the 5970 and getting 2x5870 in Crossfire.

Thanks for the reply!

I have 2 of the monitors running over DVI, the other over Displayport.

Would getting 2 individual cards help with the VRam issue? I thought if I crossfired them I'd still have the same (1 GB) albiet at a faster clock.

Would downgrading the res help? And would 1920 x 1200 be do-able?

Dropping the res'll probably help, but moving to 5870CF from a 5970 won't help a bit. In fact, it might make things worse as the EyeFinity + CrossFireX combo with 5870's seems to still have a few bugs to be caught.

Thanks for the info. I'll spend some time setting custom resolutions for my monitors. Will 1920 x 1200 be reasonable or is that still too aggressive?

I've also seen some people saying that disabling crossfire helps on some Eyefinity games (as in increasing framerate). Will this help at all (and is it even possible on a 5970?)

Something may be wrong with your setup or your in-game settings. I use the same system as yours and GRID runs perfectly smooth, although with AA disabled.

At first I had issues with some games too but now the only game that I tried and choked at this resolution is Operation Flashpoint: DR.

Using a 3x 1920x1200 resolution on this system is not (yet) a standard Eyefinity feature.

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions about what I could look at?

I have 3 Dell 30" monitors attached to a single 5970, running on Windows 7 64 with 12 GB of ram.

Basically if I start Grid at native res, the movie starts but then stutters and then updates once every few seconds :

Any tips where I could look?

The only difference with my system is that it has 6 GB ram.

The main reason why some games did not work for me initially was that they would default with too much AA, maybe because I tried the game on a single screen first. I thought this may be your problem, since L4D runs fine for you and this game engine is very easy to drive. Another reason could be that I got the Steam version of GRID so maybe you have to check for a patch?

Disabling Crossfire is possible with a 5970 too, by checking the "Disable Catalyst AI" box in the CCC. It helped me to get Crysis playable and apparently the same applies to NFS Shift. But all other games I tried so far run better with Crossfire enabled.

I can do some testing to compare if you want when I'm back home in a few days, but I can tell you that a single 5970 is more than capable of driving modern games at 7680x1600 and often with high graphics settings.

Just an aside, how are you guys able to set non-native resolutions for Eyefinity? For example, I have three 24", which I run in portrait mode at 3600x1920 (1200x1920x3). I'd like to run it at 3150x1680 (1050x1680x3) or 2700x1440 (900x1440x3) for games that are too much to handle for a single 5870.

As far as I am aware, non-native res EyeFinity is currently a bit of a hackjob solution. Dave Baumann has said ATi are looking into non-native res EyeFinity, although I've got no idea when that would make an appearance in drivers... :(
